What chalk games do you play?
My boys love to just doodle and draw.Our favourite must be the egg shaped chalk because the pencil shaped ones just break. …all the time. They drop them, they roll off and they break with pressure. For the preschooler this can be a frustrating time when they are trying to draw a huge circle. And even more frustrating for the Kindergartner who comes along next to use the blue and it’s in pieces, lots of pieces, none that can be used to write “Dinosaur” underneath their latest drawing. Can you see I’ve been there? So it is a sad day that our Easter egg shaped chalks are running out. I was thinking of what I could do with these little pieces of chalk when I thought of this game.
Find your farmhouse
Draw a circle around it. This equals home/dry land/safety.
Draw a circle around the land. This equals the river.
Draw a circle around the river. This equals the forest.
Line up your favourite animals in the Forest.
Make up a good story about how they need to get home without drowning or getting lost in the forest. The kids will soon get the idea they need to fly……but with precision.

They boys played for quite a while taking turns to get their animals home. It’s pretty tricky. You can’t get too excited. You must concentrate, aim and throw using a variety of force depending on the object. We did get a lot of lost animals in the forest or to drowning not to mentioned the poor butterfly( see slideshow). They really took on the story I created and talked about the amazing journey each animal took.
So, now we have this game AND hopscotch to add to our chalk games outside in the Summer.

Here is a fun sidewalk chalk game called Put Out the Fire! Using sidewalk chalk draw a ladder on the ground. At the top of the ladder draw a large fire with flames. Place a bucket of water with a big sponge by the picture of the fire. The child jumps through the rungs of the sidewalk chalk ladder, puts the sponge in the bucket of water and wrings the sponge out over the fire picture to put out the fire. Repeat “climbing ladder” and “putting out the fire” until the entire sidewalk chalk fire picture has disappeared. I haven’t been very creative with the chalk outside – it has been just drawing. Some great ideas here, thanks for sharing them.
